DraftStreet Lineup Tips: NBA Picks Friday 3/15/2013

draftstreet-lineup-tipsCollege basketball may be taking center stage for the next month, but the NBA will churn on and playoff races will be decided while the “amateurs'” compete in one-and-done tournaments. Friday nights are busy in the professional ranks and this Friday gives us 12 games to pick through to set our lineups on on DraftStreet.

The big news in the NBA is that Kobe Bryant was injured Wednesday in the loss to the Hawks. Whether Dahntay Jones ┬áhad injurious intent is questionable, but the fact that Kobe won’t play on Friday against the Pacers means more of an opportunity for other Lakers to step up. My Wednesday picks were Russell Westbrook (36.75 points – not bad, but not outstanding) and Rodney Stuckey (26.75 – pretty good for a bargain).

Power Play: John Wall – G

Washington Wizards vs. New Orleans Hornets

(Draft for $14,120 on Draft Street)

Since he led one of the more talented rosters in recent college basketball memory, I have been a Wall fan. Let’s face it, until recently with the Wizards, that 2010-11 Kentucky team had as much NBA talent (DeMarcus Cousins, Patrick Patterson, and Eric Bledsoe) as any of Wall’s NBA squads (remember Andre Blatche and JaVale McGee?). Now Wall is healthy and playing with some professionals. He ┬áhas produced sweet numbers of late and that should continue when the Hornets come to town.

In his last two games, Wall has averaged 49.38 points on Draft Street, which makes him a nice bargain at his just over average price. The Hornets are not very defensively stout in the backcourt and Wall may want to show his fellow Wildcat alum, Anthony Davis, what he has leaned in his two plus years in the NBA.

Bargain Play: Jodie Meeks – G

Los Angeles Lakers at Indiana Pacers

(Draft for $5,610 on Draft Street)

Someone has to step up for the Lakers and it might as well be Meeks who could start in place of Kobe Friday against the Pacers. Another former Kentucky Wildcat, Meeks arrived before the current wave of John Calipari super recruits and has made his living in the NBA by nailing 3-pointers. He hit five long range shots earlier in the month against New Orleans to help the Lakers stage an incredible fourth-quarter comeback.

The match up is far from optimal for the 6-4 Meeks since the Pacers are one of the most stingy teams in terms of giving up points. However, it’s hard to argue with the bargain basement price. I guess Antawn Jamison ($7,983) could be a consideration, but I’d rather go with the direct replacement for Bryant.
